The National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET), formerly the All-India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT), is the qualifying test for MBBS and BDS programs in Indian medical and dental colleges. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).Before NTA, which is an independent autonomous and self-sustained premier testing organization, the test was conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The examination, which offers 90,000 seats in MBBS and BDS Colleges of India, is conducted in the month of May every year.

A candidate who wishes to study medical courses needs to have Physics, Chemistry, Biology / Biotechnology as their compulsory subjects in Class 10th and 12th and must have passed these subjects. The candidate must show their passing certificate at the time of the counselling round. Marks in Mathematics are not considered in NEET-undergraduate exam (NEET-UG).

Other than undergraduate courses, NTA also administers NEET post-graduation (NEET-PG), an eligibility-cum-ranking examination prescribed as the single entrance examination for admission to various MD/MS and PG diploma courses.

The NEET exam is conducted online and in 11 languages — English, Hindi, Marathi, Odia, Tamil, Marathi, Urdu Bengali, Telugu, Kannada, and Assamese. The duration of the examination is three hours and a candidate needs to answer 180 questions. The exam paper is divided into three sections — Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany and Zoology).

As soon as NEET results are announced, NTA declares the counselling process too. The schedule for NEET counselling gets uploaded on the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) website.

After qualifying for the NEET UG exam, students must appear for counselling. There are some other exams such as AIIMS and JIPMER for medical college admission, for which a student can also appear for the entrance examination. Hence this program is to get the candidate a permit to practice as a specialist in allopathic. It is generally a 5.5-year course including a one-year compulsory internship. Also, it can be completed at a college accredited by the National Medical Commission. This program covered various fields of medication and human life structures.

This year, National Testing Agency (NTA) released the NEET UG result 2024 on 14th june, Thursday. The exam was conducted on may 5th  2024, for 1, 872, 341 candidates in 497 different cities in India and 14 cities abroad. Tanisha from Rajasthan has secured the top position with 715 marks in NEET UG 2022 followed by Vatsa Ashish Batra and Hrishikesh NagbhushanGangule with AIR 2 and AIR 3, respectively.

NEET Merit List 2024

NTA makes the merit list of the candidates based on the results declared. There are different merit lists which are prepared on the basis of the category of the candidate. NTA also releases an overall NEET Merit List which has all the details of the candidates who have cleared the examination. These merit lists are important at the time of the Counselling process. The seat allotment is done on the basis of these merit lists only.

There are three different types of merit lists given below:

(a) Overall Merit List: Overall Merit list is prepared by NTA. It has a list which includes the names and ranks of the candidates who appeared for the NEET Examination. Overall Merit List is used in the Counselling process of both, national and state allotment of seats.

(b) 15% AIQ Merit List: This merit list has the names of those candidates only who qualify NEET Examination. MCC (Medical Counselling Committee) prepares this merit list.

(c) State Quota Merit List: Every state will prepare their individual merit lists for admissions to 85% of state quota seats. These merit lists include only those candidates who will qualify for NEET examination and register for the Counselling of that respective state.

The tie-breaking method in NEET Exam

When two or more candidates get the same marks in exam, it leads to a tie. There are a lot of candidates who secure the same marks in NEET Examination but are given different ranks.

For such situations, NTA has a tie-break rule. The parameters which are considered in the case of a tie in scores are following:

(i) Candidates who score higher marks in Biology are given a higher rank than the other candidate.

(ii)If the scores in Biology section are equal, candidates with higher marks in Chemistry will be assigned a higher rank as compared to the other candidate

(iii) If marks scored in Biology and Chemistry is equal, the candidate with a lesser number of incorrect answers will be assigned a higher rank.

(iv) Age factor is also involved in the tie-breaking protocol till last year, where the candidate with older age is given a higher rank. But this factor has been revoked by this year.

NTA has released the NEET 2022 Cut off along with the results. The following table shows the NEET 2022 cut-off percentile and the score range according to different categories of the applicants:
